Smyth's challenge to the authenticity of this work occupied about two hundred and fifty pages of that work and colored Smyth's arguments throughout the rest of the book. Smyth's biography of the great Anglo-Saxon ruler was informed throughout by a grand thesis, that the Life of King Alfred attributed to Asser was actually a late tenth-century forgery by the Ramsey monk and scholar Byrhtferth. The reason for the change of title is obvious to anyone who has read or knows of Smyth's provocative and controversial King Alfred the Great (1995). Smyth has produced a translation of and commentary upon what he terms The Medieval Life of King Alfred the Great, a work known to most scholars as Asser's Life of King Alfred. ![]() ![]() I would rate this book to anyone who likes fast paced thrilling adventure books full of surprises or anyone that enjoys fantasy. Only Mother Goose, one of the Fairy Godmother’s friends and their grandmother knows about Lloyd. Instead of being their father the Masked Man is actually their uncle Lloyd, who was the “ugly duckling” of the family and had turned evil. Their grandmother (the previous godmother) also passes away. ![]() In the previous book Alex accidentally witnessed that the Masked Man’s face is exactly like their fathers who was killed in a car accident in their world. The fairy council promotes Alex as the Fairy Godmother in training. They then explore and save the fairy tale world from the evil Enchantress, and the Masked Man who wants control over the kingdoms. ![]() There are three other prequels before this book where the main characters, Alex and Conner Bailey find out that their grandmother is the fairy godmother and lives in a different fairy tale dimension. Colfer is only 25 years old, and was born in and currently lives in California. The author of this book is Chris Colfer who is also a movie and television actor. One amazing book that I read recently is the “Land of Stories #4: Beyond the Kingdoms”. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Most of the millions of people of French Canadian descent today, both in Quebec and the rest of Canada and the USA (and beyond!), are descendants of one or more of these courageous women of the 17th century. Seconds Away: A Mickey Bolitar Novel by Harlan Coben Coben was nominated for an Edgar award for SHELTER, the first in the Mickey Bolitar series, and SECONDS AWAY is just as absorbing and mysterious. ![]() Now I guess I'll have to buy the next one to see what happens (good business from the author!) but I'm not really sure I want to read all through another one incase its unresolved again ! Harlan Coben has written this novel and the Mickey Bolitar saga. It is a crime mystery thriller, where the character of Mickey with all his sufferings and tragedies would make you feel sympathy for him for most of the time. my main reason for wanting to read the book, is again unresolved. Seconds Away is the 2 nd chapter in the Mickey Bolitar novel series. ![]() ![]() So then one of the main storylines gets tied up quickly enough but another, the Mickeys dad situation. I found myself thinking "hang on theres only a few pages left and there's still so much unresolved". Admitedly I dont get as much reading time now as I used to so the book took me a little while to get through, but I mostly enjoyed it. ![]() Discovered Harlan Coben when in hospital in 2011 and his books helped me through a rough time, have read all of the stand alones (I think !) but only one of he Myron series, however I did enjoy Shelter and after the jaw-dropping ending to that I just had to read Seconds Away. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The will is so odd and includes bequests that are so wildly unlikely that Gamache and the others suspect the woman must have been delusional.
